What is a Community Breastfeeding Resource?

A Community Breastfeeding Resource offers at least one free service and meets all the following criteria :

  • It is a not-for-profit organization; it may or may not be incorporated
  • It is community-based and is engaged in the community
  • It is a good corporate citizen and uses approaches that promote breastfeeding-friendly environments
  • It is free to determine its own mission, approaches, actions, and advocacy
  • It fosters participation, inclusion, and democratic community action
  • It is independent of the government and governed by a group of volunteers

This definition has been adapted for breastfeeding-friendly environments and to include groups that are not incorporated, based on the eight criteria of a network of independent community organizations (Action communautaire autonome au Québec, information in French only).
